Canon Releases EOS R8 Mark II with a New Design

Canon has announced the EOS R8 Mark II, a compact 24.2-megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera that adds in-body image stabilization, improved autofocus and handling, faster sustained shooting, and expanded video capabilities while retaining the lightweight positioning of the original EOS R8.

Availability & Pricing

The Canon EOS R8 Mark II will be available in late October 2026 for an estimated retail price of $1,899 USD, with an RF24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM kit available for $2,099. Canon will also release the new EG-E2 Extension Grip for $99.99 and Speedlite EL-5 Ver.2 for $379 alongside the camera.

Early Analysis

The EOS R8 Mark II addresses one of the most notable compromises of the original R8 by adding IBIS while preserving the compact, lightweight concept that separated it from Canon's higher-end full-frame bodies. The new design seems to be reminiscent of the older T70 and T80 models

Canon has also introduced two new image profiles called Negative Filmtone and Positive Filmtone which may appeal to newer photographers and those looking for a more "point-and-shoot" experience.

The $1,899 launch price does, however, move the R8 Mark II considerably further upmarket than its predecessor, placing greater importance on its size and weight advantage as Canon continues to narrow the capability gap between its compact full-frame cameras and the EOS R6 series. Over time though, once price drops the R8 Mark II could prove to be one of the most desirable and best-value options for entry-level or mid-range hybrid shooters.
