Nikon Releases Z5IIC, a Slightly Confusing Camera

Nikon has announced the Z5IIC, a full-frame mirrorless camera that carries over much of the imaging performance of the Z5II while removing the electronic viewfinder and simplifying several aspects of the body. Built around a 24.5-megapixel BSI sensor and EXPEED 7 processor, the Z5IIC adds beginner-focused Scene Modes, Imaging Recipes, and expanded subject detection while retaining features including IBIS and internal N-RAW video recording.

Key Specs

  • 3.2-inch vari-angle LCD with 1.04-million-dot resolution
  • No electronic viewfinder
  • New Fish subject detection mode
  • Up to 30 fps JPEG shooting with Pre-Release Capture
  • Single UHS-II SD card slot, down from dual slots on the Z5II
  • ISO 100-64,000, expandable to ISO 50-204,800 equivalent
  • Maximum 1/8,000 sec shutter speed
  • 134 × 80.5 × 72 mm body
  • Internal N-RAW video recording and cropped 4K 60p

Availability & Pricing

The Nikon Z5IIC will be available beginning in mid-October 2026 for $1,399.95 USD, with both black and silver finishes available. A kit with the NIKKOR Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 will be available for $1,699.95, with additional retailer bundles pairing the camera with the NIKKOR Z 26mm f/2.8 or NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2.

Early Analysis

The Z5IIC is an unusual addition to Nikon's full-frame lineup, particularly when demand for a smaller Nikon body has largely centered around a mini ZR, a true compact photography-focused camera, or a rangefinder-style model drawing from the Zf and Zfc. Instead, Nikon has effectively reshaped the Z5II around a flat-top body, retaining much of its underlying performance while removing the EVF and second card slot. It is also the same 72 mm depth as the Z5II, limiting the size advantage despite the removal of the viewfinder. Nikon says the "C" stands for "Casual," rather than "Compact," which helps explain some of these decisions.

That Casual positioning still creates an odd combination of capabilities and compromises. The camera retains strong EXPEED 7 autofocus, up to 7.5-stop IBIS, internal N-RAW video, and up to 30 fps JPEG capture, yet removes the viewfinder that would make its performance more practical for action and wildlife photography. The 1.04-million-dot rear display is also a surprising compromise for a camera built entirely around a screen-first experience, particularly when the Z5II offers roughly twice the resolution.

At $1,399.95, the Z5IIC faces strong competition and its compromises are harder to overlook, but its long-term position could become considerably more interesting as prices fall. If the body eventually reaches the sub-$1,000 range, it could become the first affordable full-frame Z mount camera to bring Nikon's newer EXPEED 7 generation of autofocus performance to lower budgets, potentially making its unusual compromises much easier to accept.
