Canon Announces the EOS R6 Mark III, a Hybrid Powerhouse for Photo and Video

A New Generation for Full-Frame RF

Canon has announced the EOS R6 Mark III, a full-frame mirrorless camera designed for professionals and advanced hybrid creators who move fluidly between stills and video. Building on Canon’s 5-series and 1-series legacy, the R6 Mark III brings a new 32.5-megapixel sensor, faster performance, and video features that make it one of the most capable midrange cameras Canon has produced.

The camera can shoot at 40 frames per second with the electronic shutter and 12 fps mechanically, backed by CFexpress Type B and SD dual slots for hybrid reliability. Pre-continuous shooting captures up to 20 frames before the shutter is pressed, giving action shooters more flexibility.

Video capability is a clear highlight. The R6 Mark III records 7K 59.94p RAW Light, 7K 30p Open Gate for flexible cropping and vertical workflows, and 4K 119.8p for smooth slow motion. Oversampled 4K 60p and 4K 30p modes use the full 7K readout for sharper detail, while Canon Log 2 delivers up to 15 stops of dynamic range. Autofocus gains from Canon’s Cinema EOS algorithms, offering refined subject recognition and smoother focus transitions inspired by the C400 and C80.

Canon says the R6 Mark III is built for creators spanning portrait, event, wildlife, and social content production, offering a balance of professional capability and portability.

Alongside the camera, Canon introduced the RF 45 mm F1.2 STM, a compact and lightweight prime lens with a natural field of view and bright aperture. At just 346 g, it delivers the shallow depth and rendering of an f/1.2 lens in a form small enough for daily use, thanks to PMo aspherical optics and a gear-type STM motor.

The EOS R6 Mark III will be available in November 2025 starting at $2,799 body-only, with several kit options. The RF 45 mm F1.2 STM lens follows in December for $469.99.

Our take

Canon’s R6 line has long aimed to be the hybrid workhorse for creators who want flagship reliability in a smaller form. Until now, the Nikon Z6III, released last year, had arguably pulled ahead in this segment with its speed, dynamic range, and advanced video pipeline. The R6 Mark III finally gives Canon users a comparable option, slightly pricier but offering strong specs and a proven color profile.

How it is received will depend on real-world performance and thermal management, but on paper this is the most capable mid-tier full-frame Canon has built yet. For hybrid shooters deciding between Nikon and Canon, the competition is now closer than it has been in years.
